Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel
Upon first glance this might have not been a book I'd normally read, about a deep friendship between two girls in rural China. Set in the early- to mid-1800s, it's actually a pretty touching and emotional novel about devotion, anger, loyalty, steadfastness and love (with a little bit of the footbinding practice thrown in for good measure).
